Masters Open Rowing is for scullers and sweep rowers who want to improve technical skills and maintain general fitness by participating in a regular coached workout. Participants must be RRC members who have an up-to-date USRowing waiver and who are capable swimmers. Social distancing, masks and equipment cleaning will be maintained according to the posted guidelines. Continued enrollment in these programs is at the discretion of the coach.
Prerequisites for joining masters programs:
At least 1 year of experience and 1 completed Novice/ Intermediate program
Capable swimmer for water safety
Current Year RRC Membership
Execution of this year’s USRowing waiver

Learn to Row a Single with Coach Roger Payne
Discover the joy and challenge of single sculling in this coached program designed specifically for new rowers. This program offers hands-on instruction in the fundamentals of sculling—from boat handling and balance to stroke technique and water safety. With small group sessions and personalized coaching, you'll gain the skills and confidence to row a single shell with control and efficiency. Program will prepare you to take Captain's Test, required to row singles on your own. This program is led by Roger Payne, RRC sculling coach with over 40 years of experience and UVA Boatman Emeritus.
This program is open to all rowers with:
✔️ At least one year of rowing experience
✔️ Completion of at least one novice or intermediate class, or with coach’s approval, including 2025 Novice programs.

Take your rowing to the next level with our dedicated Masters Coached Program, focused on advancing rowing techniques and overall fitness in both sculling and sweep boats. Whether you're looking to refine your blade work, build boat speed, or simply enjoy well-structured practices with like-minded rowers, this program is for you. The program is led by Reece Anderson, an experienced US Rowing Level 1 coach and an elite award winning athlete rowing with VRA men's team.

Intensive masters clinic with guest coach Kate Kelly
This intensive 2 week clinic is a unique opportunity for advancing rowing techniques and fitness in both sculling and sweep boats, coached by Kate Kelly UVA Women’s Graduate Assistant Coach with the help of Jenna Hajji and Sydney Fratamico.
Open for all masters with at least one year of experience and at least one novice/ intermediate class completed or at the coaches discretion. Decent fitness level is a must. Boat preference will be accommodated as much as possible.
