Learn to Row & Novice Rowing

Rivanna Rowing offers two levels for new rowers (and returning rowers needing a refresher) to learn and develop core rowing skills in both sweep (one oar) and sculling (two oar) disciplines.

Learn to Row (LTR) is designed for those with little or no rowing experience who would like to learn the basics of  rowing. Participants learn about safety, boat parts and terms, and the physical fitness relevant to rowing.

Participants start out learning the correct form on a rowing machine (ashore), then move into large boats designed for stability. LTR students then progress to 90–120 minute, on-the-water practices in various  sweep (1 oar) and sculling (2 oars) boats.

Novice Rowing is designed as a follow up to Learn-to-Row, or as a refresher for rowers returning from a long hiatus who need to regain skills. The focus is on strengthening basic rowing skills and improving rowing fitness in large crew boats.  Classes are 90-120 minutes in length, and will include both sweep and sculling experience.

Junior Learn to Row (LTR) is intended for rowers aged 13-18 without previous rowing experience.

An experienced RRC Coach in a launch (motorboat) oversees practices to motivate and advise on technique.
